The Age of Convenience

The Age of Convenience

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Why?

"

Why is it no one shells peas

like my mother used to anymore?

Why is it we simply open a tin

or peel open a resealable plastic bag,

when the act of popping a proper pod

not only has tactile, organic pleasure,

but olfactory delight and a fresh taste

that is hard to compare?

Its all a bit hazy but I think its called lazy
we are now growing snow/snap peas and eat the pod and all boy I like peas from the pod better
Now we have to figure out how to grow self-plucking strawberries and raspberries
Problems problems

Yes we like everything served neat and packaged. Many thanks Dave.
You took me back years John. I used to sit with my Nan on the steps outside our home when I was little shelling peas. Loved doing it. Felt I was doing something useful and enjoying my time with my Nan as well. A fine piece of brevity, visual and so very nostalgic. I have to say I have never bought tinned peas, frozen ones yes. Good morning.

Mum loves visiting our native Vietnam where she gets to do all things old ways. I like this.

there are so many things that technology and appliances do for us now...it's sad...we are a lazy bunch who need instant gratification.
I remember in boy scouts when we made mulligan stew...and everyone was prescribed a chore...peeling different vegetables...in the end we appreciated the meal even more.

I do admit to having succumbed in many ways, though we make many things from scratch. Thanks Jacob.
I am sure more of the millennials and Get Z types would be shelling manually if there were a YouTube tutorial on it. By the way, nice to see you back again, McF.

better than can
I've shelled a few peas in my life, but the reason I don't shell them anymore is becuz peas in the pod are horribly expensive & often not very fresh. (Haven't tried growing them in my garden, but it's probably too hot here!) However, I do totally agree with your premise. I bake almost all of my bread & kneading a perfectly-textured ball of dough is one of life's amazing pleasures, not to mention it completely blots out the political mudslinging in this country as the election nears! *wink! wink!* Fondly, Margie

Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
