Say Their Names

We kneel in solidarity

with our fists in the air.

We are the voice for the voiceless

filled with anger and despair.

We are united in our humanity

the time has come for us to share

in their grief and their burdens

to show how much we care

to show the world we care.

Author's Note

My poem was inspired by a video showing young protesters having a moment of silence for George Floyd in Minneapolis. Unfortunately it has been removed from You Tube recently but it was very moving to watch. Historically it has been young people with their passion that have brought about change. This time, unlike the 60's, it is much more multiracially inspired. It seems that the 'torch has been passed" on to a new generation.

yes ... i must agree .. the torch has passed on .. we had our go'round and now our children are hard at it .. matters of the heart and soul within do not change without each one deciding .. darkness and evil will always be with us ... within us ... without Divine intervention ... i can physically turn the other cheek .. but my heat will want to hit back ... so we practice and practice and practice some more .. i love your poem .. naming our names is so important ... in the light of the death of George Floyd and discussing it .. his name must be used .. it gives us character ...validity ... acknowledgement ... we keep our loved ones alive by their remembrance and by name ... wonderful poem Dara ... going to check the video now

I recently watched a video of Maya Angelou about being ‘human’. Your words remind me of it and how we all struggle with good versus evil and the choices we must make. I believe too that it takes Divine Intervention and a lot of practice! The changes will not happen overnight and probably not much during my lifetime but in this moment there is a feeling of hope that it can happen. So great to see you again!

yes .. its the silence beforehand that strikes me the most .. the shouts of his name overpowering ... what a horrible death for him and suffering for his family and now our Nation while thieves and violence steel the stage and politicians try so hard to use it ... Maya is marvelous .. putting her on my reading list for later today ... so glad we have the Cafe' Dara ... and friendships here in poetry ... love and peace ... i dedicate me self to practice more today ... being rather reclusive that means i will have to venture forth ;) its Sunday .. maybe Church time is in order ... one nearby is open with masks and social distancing and two services instead on one .. Lysol spraying before and after ... pretty good plan i think

I fear this virus is not going away anytime soon and we must learn how to live with it safely. It sounds like your church has a good plan in place. May you have a pleasant soulful Sunday.
