david's invitation

david's invitation

A Poem by Phibby Venable
"

not sure what i want to say here..this is a true story & harder to say. this is a tribute to david & his bike trip across country that ended at the store counter. he was like an abandoned hero in the corner.

"

david's invitation

my friend david was shot blind
in a chivalrous move he made
in the convenience store to save
the terrified cashier
he fell very hard and when
his eyes flew open again
he could not see
into any mirrors where he might find himself
or the hint of a reflection.
his independence receded to the corner
his harley rusted the pavement
his book sighed half finished
on the night stand with the clock.
he found himself in boundless,
unbalanced dark
later, he sat, in the cautious corner
of his sister's house
where he lit a million cigarettes
to the sound of faces
he could not read.
Once, he was invited
to a blow out party
and he felt a deep courage
and confidence to go

But his sister said, no.

Before he died, he said,
he cried that night,
because he didn't go.

Too many of us have said no.

The true stories are the hardest and the best.
if you are ever on Facebook, look me up.

I am not here as much, but would still like to stay reading as things are written.
