The Green Horse

 

 

The Green Horse

There is my green horse hidden in the trees.
He has rolled in spring mud, now his back
glistens with rings of clover in a patch.
In truth, he is a gardener, and stands
quietly in the rain, as though he plans,
quite happily to cultivate his feed.
It is a shame he has no apple seed.
There is a chance that he might grow a bough
that I could lean back under as we rode.
But as for now, his lovely growth of green
is an exhaust of wild seed gardening,
He is content to stand patient and wait,
the field his home, his back, an open plate,
for all his friends that mull inside the gate.

 

 

 

Author's Note

once in a while on the farm, a horse would actually grow green from rolling in the
wet seeded soil..

This was wonderful to read. You are so talented. If the birdies find any worms on his back he'll have passengers. lol I love horses, they are fun to watch at play, rolling on their backs; kicking their legs in the air or the colts skipping around the coral kicking their heels behind them with the joy of living. It explains why they call it "horseplay"! lol
