The North

The North

A Poem by Phillip Wolke

In the North I was trapped,

Caged and whipped but free.

In the south I’m independent,

I only have to pay with my own liberty.

I find freedom in sound,

Rhythm in melody.

I tried to live at peace,

Flow with the waves at sea.

I lose not a moment to appreciate,

The value of life as every second passes is far too great to contemplate.

But how the meaning of freedom changes with time,

Tells you only how much you have come to live outside a lie.

We're told from the start,

Act with the heart,

Educate smart and play your part.

We were free in the beginning,

Not told when to go.

But next we're rebooted,

Hope the circuits don't blow.

We're trained to be robots,

And though everyone knows,

People like to forget and claim that it's normal.

Freedom is a choice,

Freedom is a mindset,

We have to choose to press the button to have a factory reset.

But when we're truly free we are trapped in our own webs,

We're like flies to the spider,

Pigeons to bread.

Liberty comes at the cost of what's free,

Do we make decisions based on what we define as I or we?

The words and metaphors are good. Structure could use some help. Rhythm, stanzas, and regrouping the lines could all help you deliver more punch
