Hebrews 10:22 “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…
Hebrews 10 compares the Old Testament sacrifices that temporarily “covered” sin with the complete sacrifice of Christ that takes away that sin. The Law was only a “shadow of things to come.” But if we have received Christ, His sacrifice was and is the complete payment for our sins.
Because of that sacrifice, we have direct access to God through Christ and the right to call God our “Abba” Father. (Rom 8:15, Gal 4:6) Of all the things that became mine when I trusted Christ, that God became my “Abba Father” is perhaps the greatest of them all.
A man I know was visiting the Holy Land and saw a toddler running to meet his father. With delight, the child ran as fast as his little legs would carry him, all the while shouting, “Abba, Abba!” With a face full of love, the man caught the child up in his arms. It was, for me, the perfect picture of our “Abba” God.
That’s the relationship we have and, because of that relationship, Hebrews 10 challenges us to do three things. Because each begins with, “Let us,” they all imply that we have a choice. The first challenge is to “draw near.” Draw near…the God who breathed out galaxies, who spoke the heavens into existence…that’s the One who calls us to “draw near.”
But I’ve failed Him so many times. Draw near. But I struggle so with anger and hurt and unforgiveness. Draw near. You don’t know how broken I am, how afraid I am, how overwhelmed I am. You’re right; I don’t. But God knows all those things, and He says, “Draw near.” Not only are we invited to “draw near,” but we are told we can do so with a true heart and in full assurance of faith.” (Heb 10:22)
There are probably times when your heart, like mine, is so overwhelmed you’d give anything to just close your eyes and rest…take a break from the struggles you’re facing. Here’s where I remind you that God knows every struggle you and I are facing. And He didn’t allow those things that have happened or are happening in our lives to drive us away. He intends that they will cause us to “draw near.”
Kari Jobe sings a beautiful contemporary Christian song called, “The More I Seek You.” It says what you’d expect…“The more I seek You, the more I find You; the more I find You, the more I love You.” But then the chorus takes it to another level by talking about the longing of the singer’s heart:
“I wanna sit at your feet/drink from the cup in your hand.
Lay back against you and breathe/hear your heart beat.”
That’s the level of intimacy God wants with His children and not only in the good times. He wants us to run to Him in joy, but also in sorrow…in delight, but also in despair. I feel certain that child running to his father and crying, “Abba, Abba” would have run as quickly if he were hurt or frightened. And he would have laid his little head on his father’s chest, knowing he was safe in his “Abba’s” arms.   The offer is there for us as well from our Abba Father…draw near. And the choice to do it or not is ours.
Challenge for Today: What might happen if we, just for today, chose to trust our Abba Father and draw close to Him?
