Penance

Penance

A Poem by Raymond Federle
"

Penance

"

That well-meaning shadow; That allusion of illusions.

Out with silver stars that threw the world into confusion.

I nodded my agreement as he stood in the wind at the fall of night.

Swore an oath on all things beautiful that my life would the heavens alight.

Fire falling in the distance.

The sand that he had sculpted slipped out of existence.

As he turned and paced, declared whispers, fierce and true.

He knew exactly what would happen, but how he just knew.

That ancient, empowered creature, that good man of poise and fury.

Dressed as judge and executioner was just one member of the jury.

Though my world fell from high, as truth saw through his penance stare.

I still gaze upon his cryptic words, lying heavy in the air.
