Forgetting

Forgetting

A Poem by Rebecca

When I entered the s****y corner store

and took out my wallet

I realized I don’t remember what brand of cigarettes you smoke anymore.

I used to buy them for you.

I realized I was forgetting the way they touched your lips,

which was always more gentle than you touched mine.

So I drove home with my headlights off

and I put on your old basketball sweatshirt.

It doesn’t smell like you anymore.

The way it touched your skin was always more subtle then when you touched me.

I got into bed and forgot about you

As I wrote down on this paper how to remember.
