Past Promises Made To Myself

Past Promises Made To Myself

A Poem by Redfoot

A phone rings, reality would like a word
News that was cruel, obscene and absurd

Regret was a wave that blocked out all else
As I thought of past promises made to myself

Promises of family, of friends, and health
Things more important than the chasing of wealth
I would change things then, no matter the cost
Learn what mattered from my last tragic loss

The shock of this moment, frozen in place
I hear their words, but I see your face
So full of life, and love, and grace
Now all that remains is an empty space

I didn't make the changes I promised I would
Old habits are easy while life's going good
I once saw clearly, with the help of my sorrow
Then once again blinded, by a promised tomorrow

Things that we did in the time that we shared
Now told to your family to show that I cared
Good times, great days and the things that we dared
Empty words when the depth of the loss is compared

I had means, I had time, I could have made room
It was never a thought you could leave so soon
No words can right wrongs, no matter how true
My deepest regret is I missed out on you

I remember you never liked tears or goodbyes
So I'll see you soon, and wipe these from my eyes
