John the ProphetA Chapter by JoeA small character blurb for my (hopefully; fingers crossed folks!) upcoming project The Inner World Chronicles. He sits on a throne, seeing nothing and everything all at once. He remembers, vaguely, a time and place that's different from this one. A time when automobiles and computers were in every garage and household, a place where there was law and order in the country and on the TV. This is not that place, this is a time when bows and arrows and swords are used to hunt and when each day alive could be the last, a place where nothing grows, where debris and people materialize from seemingly nowhere, where people live in tribes and kill one another for a scrap of food or clothing. He doesn't see these things, but knows they are there. He knows because he is John the Prophet.
He remembers little of his former life, outside of the Inner World. What he does remember is a painful realization, one that took place in one of the automobiles that don't exist in this dimension. He remembers, oh god, yes he does. Now he sits on a throne in a small temple in a corner of the Inner World, waiting for his seekers. They will come, they always do, to ask him for guidance and to answer their questions. And he will answer them because he knows. He sees the knowledge without the eyes that were melted in his skull by his own hand, but with inner sight, and he will answer the questions of every Inner World inhabitant if they come to him. He is John the Prophet. © 2010 Joe |
