Hi Richard,
Found this lovely (truthful) Sonnet while working on my computer ... here on a short vacation.
I totally believe that vows are not what is important in keeping a marriage (relationship) together.
The only thing, in my opinion, that helps a "love affair' to continue is communication.
I have been known to say of my relationships ... "Whats love got to do with it." I know that sounds harsh..But for me being around for as long as I have and having been married...well, a few times .. I have come to realise that, and again for me, true love is actually a truthful relationship. So, with that I feel vows are useless...easy to say but not so easy to live by. Respect for me is a more accurate word to describe a good marriage. Not trying to control ones partner, etc. Life is too short to play games...As time with a partner flows by ones love grows or diminishes. Hopefully, it grows and then one can truthfully say..Hey "I have fallen in love with you!"

Sorry Richard,
Right after I wrote my rather long message I thought "Oh no, what about the poem!" and, was just coming back to review it.
I really enjoyed the theme...well, that is why I got carried away with my own thoughts. I believe that when a poem is excellent (as yours always are!) they tend to stir up many emotions...which is good...right ...
Your beautiful Sonnet and, oh so perfect Image inspired me to write. I studied every line with hopes of really understanding the rhyming... I do have one quick question. For me I see the perfect rhyme on every line except for hi and sky and side and lied. They sound perfect but because they are not a perfect match does this mean they are considered slant rhymes?

Vows are meant to be kept and those of us who have been able to accomplish should feel proud and truly blessed as well as the Love that has been shared throughout the years. This is a heartfelt piece that I feel others may be able to relate to. A nice piece of writing Richard.

Only trouble with vows, Mary Jo,
Is that life and time are so unpredictable one never knows if they can keep them, despite however sincere they're made at the time they've taken and sworn to.
For this reason, I think vows (especially, wedding vows) should be tempered with a healthy dose of reality … for instance:
You and I both know there are no guarantees in love, and that its totally unpredictable. That's why we should resist making a bunch of vows and promises we have no idea if we can keep for life, despite how deeply and sincerely we may feel them at the time. It's better to say that we deeply and honestly hope and pray that we'll never part and will always love one other the same (or better) than we do now, if life and time will allow us to without ending up miserable and unable to stand the sight of each other. Now, if you still want me, let me slip this ring on your finger and we'll give it our best shot ... LOL!
Perhaps, not the most romantic ceremony ever, but surely realistic and honest, eh? ; )
Besides, sometimes, love is not enough.
