At LastA Poem by Rita L. SevAll credit to Lyn A. Venable and Rod Serling
Henry Bemis was a
gentle soul He wanted only to
read Books, papers,
magazines ~ The printed page
filled his need
But Henry never
had the time In the bank where
he worked all day At night his wife
took over his life, Her plans stole
his leisure away
He also had
myopia, Severe
nearsightedness He wore a pair of
thick spectacles, But squinted
nonetheless
One day while
Henry was in the vault The atom bomb
exploded He woke to utter
ruin, His world broken
and eroded
Realizing he was
all alone There was no
sorrow fated ~ The library was
nearby, And Henry was
elated
He stumbled over
crumbled remains A starving man at
the end of a fast He smiled and
piled up volumes ~ There was time
enough at last!
Henry had just
what he wanted It seemed the
fates had tried But then he
dropped his glasses
Poor Henry Bemis
cried.
