Puppy Love: Summer Of 95

Puppy Love: Summer Of 95

A Story by RomaJ

It was the summer of '95, and we were just teenagers, when I met a boy with the sweetest smile. First, I fell in love with his voice. Then with his smile. And finally, with him. When he looked my way, it was love at first sight.

He loved to dance. After school, he would practice with his group, and I would wait. That night, when practice was finished, it was just the two of us. He took my hand. As our fingers touched, it was electricity.. static electricity. Its shock made us both laugh. We quickly pulled back, but we couldn’t stop smiling, couldn’t stop staring into each other’s eyes.

Then he kissed me, deeply, and for a moment, it felt like we were breathing as one.
When it was time for me to go home before curfew, he smiled, turned on the radio, and a song by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs began to play. (I’m pretty sure he already had that CD planned. )

And it brings a smile, thinking of his smile, as he pressed play.

"(Stay) Ahhh just a little bit longer… (Please) Please, please, please, please tell me you’re going to..."

In that moment, I wished I could.
Sometimes I think back to that night...to that perfect, fleeting time...if only for a moment. To stay just a little bit longer.

Every time I hear that song, I am there again, standing in that moment, with him. But we were just kids. And it was just puppy love.

Dear Roma this is such a sweet and touching write of those first flutterings and it reminds me too, how strong those emotions can be in tender years. Isn’t it amazing how an old song can transport you back in time in seconds to relive the experience again. I’m sure this must bring you beautiful warm memories. A lovely read. Have a beautiful Tuesday.

Ah Roma, you make me feel so old. You wrote this beautifully, captured a time and a place that is so wonderful in that time of life. Brought back very old memories for me. Thank you.

I was once a young male, so I think I know what the lad had in mind. The inference is that you didn't hang around. You did the right thing. It was, after all, just puppy love.

Nice one. This also caused some nostalgia for me. I love the line "Then he kissed me, deeply, and for a moment, it felt like we were breathing as one."

I like the feel of this one a lot. The song "Stay" is so good and your story makes me remember what youth felt like. Well done. ~Jim

Puppy love is the best! It still has the feeling of innocence, discovery… .. it’s a joyous moment to reflect back on these younger years, even for a fleeting moment and the song brings you back to that special moment
Lovely RomaJ

Roma, this writing gift of yours just moves me. Thank you for sharing Puppy Love. Those first moments of romantic interaction between ourselves and another are so formidable, indelible, undying. They are imprinted on our souls by the sweetness of a lover of the moment and by our own desire to be seen, known and validated as a human who is worthy and lovable.

Such nostalgia in this poem and that feeling that most of us have had and still remember. And all the more relatable in that in our longing for youth some still get from time to time. A lovely flash from the past, innocent and a fond memory. Well written Roma
