Matthew 3:8, 11 - The Ideal Evangelist (Bible Journal)

A Chapter by Roses311Sublime

"[8] Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.
[11] 'I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am"so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.'"
- Matthew 3:8, 11 NLT

John the Baptist makes two profound statements in this Scripture. First he calls out the judgemental religious leaders, telling them to prove that they have really turned away from their wrongdoing by their actions going forward (spoiler alert: they fail). John also makes it very clear that he doesn't want to be the one that is ultimately glorified. Despite having people coming to see him and follow him, he wants the people to give their devotion and worship to Jesus, not himself. John presents himself as the kind of evangelist we should all aspire to be like (although eating locusts and honey are not requirements).

Lord Jesus, thank You for paying for my sins past, present, and future with Your death and resurrection. Thank you for faith role models like John that do great works that point to You for the glory. Please help me to reflect my own repentance from my sins through the actions I take going forward, and please help me to point to You for all the glory in any successes and accomplishments in my own life. In Your Holy name I pray, Amen.
