Matthew 8:8-9 - Being Humble With Authority (Bible Journal)A Chapter by Roses311SublimeMy journal entry from the Crossroads Anywhere app for today's Scripture reading of Matthew Chapter 8.
"[8] But the officer said, 'Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. [9] I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.'"
- Matthew 8:8-9 NLT I love the faith of this Roman officer in Scripture. He understands his place within the Roman empire's power structure and even has power of his own. Despite Jesus being willing to come to his home, he humbly declines the invitation and puts himself below Jesus as he asks for healing for his servant. As a teacher and a parent, there are times in life where the authority I have been entrusted with makes me feel powerful, and there are times when situations in these roles beyond my control occur, making me feel powerless (much like the officer requesting the healing). Regardless of where I am as far as control over life situations, I want to remember that at the end of the day the only one truly in control is God, and I want to give Him the utmost respect at all times. Lord, thank You for Scriptures and verses that hit differently regardless of how often I have heard them over the years (the first part of this Scripture was one I heard many times in Catholic mass in my childhood). Thank You for the example the Roman officer left in being humble and aware of God's power and authority over our own power and authority (which is ultimately God's power and authority as well). Please help me to also recognize this and let it reflect in my actions going forward. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen. © 2025 Roses311Sublime |
