A Little Girl's Story

A Little Girl's Story

A Poem by Spencer Barker

I'll be short and quick,
faster than it takes a frog to lick.
The story is quite sad,
but for some it makes quite mad.
It is your choice and yours only,
but I would advise you to listen and remember to do your chores!
-----
Once upon a time,
a little girl just turned nine.
Gifts of every assortment stood,
oh would she be good!
-----
Time goes,
strands of hair lengthen,
but not in the slightest for one.
-----
Little Mary,
little as she was,
could grow no longer.
Her chores were not done;
she refused to do even one wash.
-----
Years have gone by,
hairs grown old,
weak,
and brittle.
Yet, she still lives,
only nine years old.

I enjoyed the old style you've employed here, telling in a sort of Mother Goose way about the girl who stunted her own growth. The moral is an excellent one.
