Why is the smell so palatable, and so unpalatable?

I can feel the particles, in my nose, lungs.
I can taste it.

Eye watering
Opening a window barely helps

It doesn't move on, only layers.
Adds to the chaos and confusion.

You made me sit through it, 
you told me I can't smell anything

Maybe it's just our sense is different?
