Desperate

Desperate

Desperate

I'm desperate to find a way

To get across this no-man's land

The enemy's guns tear down friends

And make little puffs in the sand.

A deafening blast shakes the air

For a while, I can't hear or see

Grime in my ears, dirt in my eyes

In my mind, I send God a plea.

But then I get up once again

I let out a defiant yell

I rush up that steep, blood-soaked hill

And scream out proudly, "GO TO HELL!"

I make it ten feet, something hits

There's something sticky on my shirt

I try to keep my strength and will

But then I fall down, into dirt.
