Jack

Jack

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

Jack is a Lt Col, Ret

"

If you like the guy called Jack
like I know the guy
others would think us insane
and not even wonder why

The way he tells it
you would think he was great
this guy tells some big ones
though its never done with hate

When he arrives on Sunday
with his loyal group
the first thing he asks for
is,"where is my soup?"

Maxine's is so tolerant
they even let him in the door
everyone looks up and says
"what did you do that for?"

He gives his fake smile
for everyone to see
he thinks this will help
so he can eat for free

When they bring him his meal
so he can get his fill
he says to his group
"Don't hand me that bill!"

If you say something nice
to this man of ninety-two years
he says, "you're so full of bull
it comes up to your ears".

Let me be the one who praises him
I know some dandy insults
I have learned long ago
how to get results

As I write this poem
I have to wonder why
Clara still loves him,
guess he's really a wonderful guy

I was a Caregiver to a man named Jack and his wife Flo. Jack had Alzheimers but sometimes you wouldn't know it from the secrets he shared with me. I took care of them for 2 1/2 years We were very close and I loved him dearly. Jack was a people person and always had a smile for everyone even in the midst of dementia, he could sometimes even recall a strangers name who had waited on us in a coffee shop and offer his hand and his smile. Jack was a helluva man!

It is difficult not to like and enjoy the company of older people no matter how they behave at times. Well done!
