Hero Worship

Hero Worship

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

vicarious love

"
Are heroes for real
in the lives that we lead
Or the need that we feel
in our hope to succeed

In centuries of the past
 gods were often in control
Governing all phases of life
making everyone feel whole

The needs that we have
are a function of our mind
It should be no surprise
we have gods of every kind

One God has helped
in focusing our prayers
Letting heroes be the gods
that mitigate our cares

We are not so different
in the makeup of our being
From the humans of the past
you may likely be agreeing

When our heroes fail to act
the way we expect them to do
We can find new heroes
who we can be loyal to

Thinking about ages past
it is easy to understand
Why people had so many gods
in every part of the land

We shouldn't let any loss
upset the way we feel
Life will get better again
putting us on an even keel

To me, the word hero is reserved for someone who risks their life to save another. The firefighters and police officers who ran into the WTC buildings were heros as is the soldoer who drage a comrad back from the battle field or the stranger who pulls a car crash victim from a burning car.

I enjoy sports, movies and try to keep alert to the world around me. Men and woman personal life should stay personal. Even rich men can fall down like a poor man. A poor man had less distance to fall. A excellent poem. My hero are not perfect. Kosinski, Hemingway and Helen Jackson. Your poem did it purpose. Made me think this early morning.
