Reflections

for the holiday

christmas a time of memories
both pleasant and bad
when most were of sadness
little making you glad

present relives the memory
which is hard to escape
playing over again and again
the negative unpleasant tape

erase it we try
in the best way we can
foiled by the fact
it's still part of our plan

we cherish how memory helps
enabling what we need to learn
new thoughts take second place
in matters of real concern

paths of daily action
followed so long ago
determine the limitations
of where we're able to go

when we can accept
the trials we have known
and live the way we know
we won't feel so alone

if this pattern of the past
still troubles what you do
take heart from those who know
there is still hope for you

make another attempt
to see the new light
and whatever you do
don't give up the fight
