Writing Poetry

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

that makes some sense

"
Those who enjoy reading poetry
have tastes learned from their past
Helping them enjoy what they read
will be a poets primary task

Images created in verse
require words being very precise
Choices that create awareness
have no need to say them twice

Messages in these expressions
often hidden from the reader's sight
Cause some not to understand
and they fail to get the meaning right

Communication should be
discerning and wise in every way
So the reader can get the point
of what the words are trying to say

The thoughts in any poem
may not have been seen before
If each depiction is carefully chosen
our readers will enjoy them more

Since every poem is an adventure
that tries to share what is true
Giving pleasure to their readers
is what a writer hopes to do

Since words have a life of their own
which we can all try to learn
The meanings we share with our readers
should be our primary concern

Poems we write are a challenge
we need to prepare for rejection
Better poems will have to be created
if we hope to find a connection
