A Promise

A Promise

A Poem by Sam Freeland
"

we could keep

"
Promise of an afterlife
is a belief in something more
Facing the end of any life
is a most unpleasant chore

Since we create the truth
largely in our mind
Based on the way we have lived
an afterlife we can find

When we are only a memory
our reality will have left too
A new existence we will have
as true as could be true

Ability to understand this existence
resides only in a finer mind
One that is able to keep a promise
and knows the way to be kind

Practice is a way to be perfect
we hear from sages all the time
Creating room for this in our brain
will make it more than fine

True friends can keep a promise
where they learned this is not clear
Having such a sterling character
makes our relationship very dear

Nothing in life has been difficult
for those of us willing to learn
Think of our future and its promise
as the greatest gift we can earn

As we struggle to create this promise
our example may bring others on board
They will certainly be calmed by their effort
and get a peace that we all can afford
