you stood me up

you stood me up

A Poem by sea lily

you stood me up, last night,
though you didn't know it.

eight years since our lips last met,
i remember you so well,
shaggy hair
bright blue eyes
bicycle sweat.
from troubled youth, you grew
into passionate poet
vagrant anarchist.
yes, i found my picket fence
you so despised
your father had been fenced in
all his life.

now a mother, i see
the beauty of my body.
the immense gratitude
i did not hand it over
for you to use.
shaking with desire
i balked.

you entertained yourself
with passing girls
one who whispered
'when he gets drunk
he still cries about you.'
and now i see your father
in his apathetic, selfish ways
leaving two women
two families
to grow alone.

i wanted to make you regret
i wanted to make you feel envy.
you didn't possess me

and you didn't break me.

Standing tall and facing the one that hurt you. It is the greatest strength of women: the strength to face life. We men run away from it. Sorry John Wayne, but you had it all wrong.
