Vacancy

Vacancy

A Poem by Shredded Cabbage

I don’t remember
opening a vacancy.

Yet something moved in
without permission.

It did not formally
introduce itself.

It made no effort
to explain its presence.

It arranged things
without asking.

Soon, I stopped noticing
what had changed.

There are no records
of when it began.

And no indication
of when it might leave.
