Silent Suicide

Silent Suicide

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

The smoke fills my lungs with sweet tar

and nicotine

the damage so far unseen-

A terrible addiction, yes

I have been put to the test

to place these down

no longer allow them to control me so

although I delight in the slow burn

of the smoke that whirls about my head

in the exhale that fills so many with dread-

a crop that built our country still

has now become an addiction beyond my will-

When I take in its strength

it fills me with feelings

of satisfaction, although in reality

the addict's ride

may be a silent suicide.

Well written. I can understand your fascination with smoking. I started the same habit many years ago. It is a lot easier to start smoking than it is to stop, I'm afraid. Perhaps, that could be the new Surgeon General's warning on packs: "It is a lot easier to start smoking than it is to quit."

Great job!

Peace and love,
Gabe

Wonderful work. Such a difficult chore. My husband quit on January 10, 2007 and he is still cranky about it. LOL It is the best thing that he could have done, though. He found out that he has a heart problem now, so he would have had to quit anyway... it was better that he did it while he was still healthy. Take care of yourself. You have such a gift. This work is so true... silent suicide. Well done.
