By Your Side

By Your Side

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

Eyelashes as long as a Spring day

Smiles as fervent as a cougar upon prey

Beguiles me all along the way

Is there anyway to explain

the love I feel for this

the One that I procreated

brought into this world

with little care

yet upon your arrival

even the mildest fair ride

frightened me

anything that may bring you harm

brought shudders to me

and yet you just say 'Weeeeeeeeeee'

all along the way

enjoying the ride

of how wonderful life can be

when you have someone loving you

by your side.

I love how even within this expression of the mother conveying her POV, no matter how close she gets to articulating it, the power of the child's innocence charms her entirely into the moment. Meditative and trance like, fascinating sharing of the moment. The cougar reference is fun as though the child's smiles are the smirk of a defiant, natural force powerful enough to take you out of introspection/observation and into the child's universe of original perfection. It's also an amusing image that a predator is "smiling".

The fear in a modest carnival ride.

That is an EXCELLENT illustration of a mother's love.

Nothing greater than seeing the bonding of a
Mother and her Child

Sid, I don't know you well but you seem to be a great and loving mother. Your son will always remember you.
