Lonely was

The safest face

I ever knew.

Safer than yours—

The lion

From the zoo.

 

Lonely had

Eyes of gold

And

Yours is a heart

I’ll never truly hold.

 

Lonely knew

How to whisper

The right words

But

All you have

To scream

Is wrong.

 

I know it’s true:

I should never have

Left Lonely for you.

 

Lonely was
