The New World

The New World

A Poem by someguy772
"

Ramblings about yearning for the old world.

"
A young  man walks along the shore in the crisp November fall,
Feeling the breeze at his back the temperatures begin to drop as the sun sets,
Seeing the leaves fall into place beneath the trees,
He looks out onto the ocean seeing how expansive and vast it is,
Now this is the perfect moment,
At one with nature in the real world,
Not in some damned 4th dimension digital screen,
He digs into his pocket and grabs his half smoked pack of American Spirits,
Placing the cigarette in his mouth he ignites the slightly stale tobacco,
Inhaling the nicotine  and wishing for a bygone era,
"Ironic huh",
he says to himself mumbling under his breath even the digital world has taken over nicotine he thinks to himself,
People now "vape" from a battery generated computer  and unknown chemicals to make it taste like blueberry,
Even the habit  of him smoking a traditional cigarette is now seen as "outdated",
But are all outdated things bad?,
Slowly taking another drag he is deep in thought,
a yearning for times that seem so nostalgic to him but yet so alien at the same time,
A time when you could eat dinner at the table with family and friends,
When there was economic opportunity,
When the sweat off a mans brow was what guaranteed him success,
and not have to worry about some  robot taking away your profession,
When people were not self absorbed or apathetic when we actually cared about our fellow humans,
When art took dedication and obsession  to be able to create a masterpiece,
Now you can have some AI bot generate "Art" in a matter of seconds,
A time were the world didn't seem so bleak and it was authentic,
Can we even get a world like this back?
One that seems slightly less dystopian

I'm 80 years old, and I can testify that many people in that "old world" felt the same way. Nostalgia is understandable, but it goes against the inalterable truth: All things pass.
