Contemplation

I was just thinking of thinking of an old friend.

Driving down the highway,
tires clawing for tar in the snow
like frustrated chain smokers,
chasing tail lights through
post-dusk silhouettes between
cities on I-90, I think of you

Walking across campus,
hearing the Autumn crunch
of maple leaves and the snap
of twigs beneath my feet
compete with the stubborn wind
and the ringing of the bell tower
for voice beneath gray clouds,
I think of you

Late at night, lost in the glow
of my computer screen, bathing
in nostalgia and the what-ifs
that our decisions torment us with,
I sit in front of my mirror, alone,
and look myself in the eyes as
I think of you
