Burnt At Both Ends

It's strange to feel the fire around me
The way it consumes my soul.
It licks me from the inside out
And sends a tingle down my spine.
The way the smoke seeps into me,
And causes my throat to choke.
Thick, ashen air coats my lungs
Like the morning dew on grass.
I hear the crackle around me,
As the orange and red devour the walls.
The crashing of a life I knew
Smoldering into a new chapter.
But when the smoke ceases,
Will the phoenix rise from the ashes?

I suppose this burning down is a metaphor for some kind of reshaping of self. Perhaps it's the ending of marriage, giving up drugs/alcohol or such, but I know such things occur, having experienced something similar myself. Certainly, one hopes this phoenix will rise.
