Switchboard

A Poem by Hallow

I'll sit here and wait
For your call to come through.
Then I'll patch you over
To something you think is new.

For you, it's a connection
A thrilling tale to joyfully tell.
A chance at camaraderie ,
And your joy can't be fell.

For me, it's quite different
As the operator on board.
I plug wire into input
And see how long is the cord.

I sigh, and I wait
For the time I can clock out.
Being alone on the line
Causes another kind of drought.

And it's tick and tock,
And a ring that doesn't stop.
A beep in your sleep,
And a line that won't drop.

As I chirp out a high hello
And I direct all your thoughts,
Just know there's a cost.
My mind crashes; my brain rots.
