I'm fineA Story by Luther CalvinTrust me.I see a friend from across the room. Our eyes meet, and she waves. We walk, nine steps, to meet in the middle. "Hey! How are you?" she asks. "I'm fine, you?" I reply. An empty feeling overcomes my soul. I'm not fine. I feel alone. I feel like I walk alone on my path of life. The path is covered with shattered fragments of long-forgotten dreams. Plans and dreams, all replaced by an all-encompassing nothing. I've become a floater, reacting to life without doing anything on my own. My shattered heart is the only thing that's moving, and even that should stop soon. Sometimes, I forget that I'm alive. This friend is my final anchor that tethers me to reality. I'm afraid to lose her, in case I drift so far I'm lost forever. I don't tell her any of this. I'd probably just scare her away, sealing my isolated fate. "I'm fine," she responds. I wonder if she's telling the truth.
