IcarusA Poem by Alvin L. KathembeA feeling
Upon his wings of wax and plume
He soared into the sky But his ambition was his doom For men were not meant to fly. Trapped; I’m trapped in an intricate maze A labyrinth in my head Closing in on itself, with no way out And all the ends are dead… Frustration, despair - I’m trapped! Wasting away each passing day Tortured by the footfalls of Monsters pacing the passageways… I rise on wings like Icarus There’s no restraining me Leaving behind my earthbound cell - Unfettered, I am free! I soar, I dance; I’m free at last! I scream; I’m a new man! Lost in jubilation after such tribulation - The Sage’s words - “Beware the sun!” I climb, I soar, I shout, I roar I break above the clouds I shake my fist at Fate and scream My defiance aloud… By and by - oh my! Oh my! - While I’m still on the climb My freedom - precious freedom! - it falls away Starts peeling from my limbs! Frozen in time; for a second all stopped Except the clockwork in my chest Suspended, surrounded by feathers like A hatchling in a nest… Flapping my arms - but all has failed! And all starts to fall apart! Everything’s unraveling All feathers, and no wax! Look at me now, I’m plummeting And I do not know whither Belief and Faith were the wax That held my wings together… I was sure that I could soar In delusion forever But Reality’s turned my flight to a plummet, And my engines to feather… Upon wings of wax and plume I soared into the air Flew too close to the sun And fell once more into despair… © 2012 Alvin L.
