The Origin of DeathA Story by Dallas O'Hara BrownThe story of how Death came to be
The days were long as the heat from the ground seeped through my boots and made each step as if I was walking on fresh lit embers. The smell of burnt rubber invaded my nose like unwelcomed house guest. The sun reigned over me like Satan's crown slowly sucking the life out of me as I try to escape this barren sandy graveyard that some creatures call home; but the thought of ever making it out sometimes eludes my mind and that one day my body will turn to ash before it hit the ground. Luck would say I made it this far, but I would say that I'm a cruel bet between god an the devil trying to bypass the endless hour glass of time.
when the sun falls to the ground catapulting the moon into the sky, steam rolls off my exhausted body like a thick fog breezing through a swamp. I think this is the reason why I survive the nights with ease and no animal dares to come near as I rest. I make myself bare and drain my sweat from my cloths into a canteen for the up coming hell that awaits me. I lye in the open as my cloths lay next to me trying to cool my body from the heat. As I stare towards the sky most nights pondering why I took on this task. The first thoughts that always come to mind is money and my family, but I know that's not it. It wasn't fame or anything vain. I just did because I wanted to. My thoughts flowed through my mind as I rested my eyes through the night. when first heat reaches my skin I begin the process again until one day I a came across an unusual oasis that wasn't bound by time. The place was covered in giant green trees made for giants. An endless flow of water slithered through the valley and disappeared as it reaches the border of the oasis. The first chance I got I jumped into the stream and the sensation I felt from the water was nothing I have ever felt before. I don't remember much after that moment, only that I awoke to being carried be these creature that were nor men or beast but something that wasn't a part of this world. They ask me what I was doing in the oasis. So I told them that I'm on a quest to find a magical cure that is able to stop aging and sickness. The weird creatures laughed in my foolishness until I asked them about a beautiful woman in a tunic that seems to take on the brightness of the sun. The laughter soon turned to silence. The question me on her appearance and if she was anywhere near. I told them that the women has green tan skin with green eyes and that wears a blue dress under her tunic that emulates the sun. I also told them that she walks freely around there village and questioned them of not seeing her. Then a slight breeze swept through the village and the woman stood in front of me with a warming smile. She then leaned towards me and whispered in my ear that she has been waiting for me and that I can go home. Then the thought of home weakened my heart but she assured me that I was needed there. So I gathered some supplies and began my journey through that hell dreading what awaits me. A day goes by and I reach the end of the desert wondering why it took me a long time to get across, but I couldn't waste any more time knowing that my family needs me. So I reach my families village to see it burnt down and people screaming in pain. As I tried to help them the screaming stopped. When I was all done I ended near an inn where a boy asked me what was the name of my son? I told him my son's name and he said that was his name. I went on about my wife and he said that's his mother. At that moment I was relieved to see my son and gave him a hug. When I hugged him his body went limp and I saw a knife in his back. Before my son disappeared he waved goodbye and told me I brought home the cure. I didn't know that someone had to be the cure and I didn't know that death was the answer.
