The Fall

The Fall

A Poem by Alan Corbett
"

A comical poem.

"

     The Fall

Gently sinking into folds of sleep

I saw a path as smooth as polished brass.

Downward it ran with no end in sight

fast I slid with nothing to grasp.

Before I could take stock I came up sharp

a place dark, damp, and full of eerie sounds

What manner of place is this? I screamed

The Spoiler held me on esoteric grounds.

With laud and lisping speech he cried

‘Your life is written there above".

Looking at the seamless walls-- he lied

he gave me one enormous shove.

Falling further down, a cavern did appear

Lucifer’s acolytes were sneering in full array.

The Master wickedly on molten rock did leer.

‘Hades horses to hell---he said-- 'without delay’.

The journey down into depths of darkness

the ride as rough as on Quixote’s mules,

crying like a fallen angel I shouted"‘Oh lord!’

"No good crying lad you know the rules".

As I broached the fiery pit in total dread

a canopy opened as blue as blue can get,

a hand did pluck me from that fiery bed

I woke a- shivering sleep was my regret.

Lying next to me the wife did bleat.

‘Bad dream--- I’ve never seen you in such a tether’

you shouldn’t eat before you sleep,

especially large amounts of cheddar.’

Alan: It took a couple of minutes to stop laughing; and not to give it away, but I swear, this am, it's so very humid here, I looked at a carved wooden plague of one of those "sweet creatures" hanging on my garden shed and thought, they couldn't take this heat. First of all, I love it...great journey, wonderful imagination with loads of fantastic imagery. Your descriptions are are perfect. You're very talented, and remind me of another writer here. Unique, clever and a wonderful way to begin my day! Thank you...Dale
