ON A SUMMER BREAK

ON A SUMMER BREAK

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A BOY AND GIRL ONE SUMMER IN 1962

"

Yiska sat
on my lap
on the wall

by the lab
in lunch break
at high school

sunshine warmed
so did she
I held her

slender waist
smelt perfume
her mother's

whispered voice
in my ear
my brother

will tell if
he sees us
Yiska said

will tell whom?
my mother
and she'll rant

at me then
for ages
she kissed me

soft wet lips
on my lips
sound of kids

on the field
and playground
out of sight

we kissed more
hopefully
your brother

won't see us
I told her
my hand touched

her soft thigh
above us
a swallow

in the blue
of the sky.
