A COUPLE IN AMSTERDAM IN 1974 AND A CAMPING HOLIDAY

At Amsterdam
Dalya drank beer
saw the Van Gogh art
went to the Anne Frank Haus

(that really got to us)
I said
can almost feel her
there trapped for so long

then that betrayal
and death
yes
Dalya said

and dived into
a deep depression
and back
at the base camp

she sat in her tent
and brooded
and I lay in my tent
smoking and sipping

a can of beer
thinking
of the Van Goghs
and Anne Frank's Haus

and walking about there
sensing a gloom
thinking of hushed
conversations

and kisses
between young lovers
and Dalya crept
into my tent

and said
can I stay a while?
sure
I said

so she lay
on the camp bed
and slept
and I watched her sleeping

the rise and fall
of her breasts
the dark hair
and wishing I

was lying beside her there
as we did before
she sleeping
but me wanting more.
