REAL SLOW 1962

REAL SLOW 1962

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A BOY AND GIRL AND SHYNESS IN 1962

"

Elaine sat next to her sister
on the bus and not John
who her sister thought
she'd try to get

to sit there
but he sat elsewhere
and once the bus got
to school Elaine felt

such a fool
what with her sister
trying it on and such
was all too much

but John met her
at morning recess
in the corridor
after gym

are you ok?
he asked
you didn't mind me
turning up

at your house did you?
no not at all
she said
going red

looking about her
to see who saw
only I had to see you
I couldn't wait

and besides your mother
seemed ok about it
he said
she looked at him shyly

yes she was
ok about it
she lied
kids passed them by

talking some laughing
look I have to go
she said
maybe we can meet

at lunch on the field
if it's all right with you?
sure it is
he said

she hesitated
his hand touched hers
it's maths next
she said

hate maths
I've got biology
he said
I think we're on

water plants this week
she felt his hand on hers
ok best go then
she said

not wanting
his hand to go
so moving away and off
real slow.
