LUCKY DAY 1964

LUCKY DAY 1964

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A BOY AND GIRL AND AN HANDKERCHIEF AND HER MOTHER IN 1964

"

Milka paused outside
her bedroom

her mother
was in there already

what if she finds
Benny's handkerchief in there?
she mused anxiously

she hesitated
then opened the door

her mother had opened
the window

the state of your room
Milka never seen such
and the bed looks
like two were there
instead of you
you are such a fidget

sorry
Milka said
looking at the bed
searching with her eyes
for the handkerchief

and the air in here is stifling
Mother said
lost something?

just looking
Milka said

well make your bed
while you're there
I can't waste time
when you're quite capable
and poor Benny
having you
as a girlfriend

and her mother
went out along
the passage

Milka searched the bed
and found the handkerchief
under a pillow
and tucked it
in her pocket
made the bed
(after a fashion)
and went downstairs

Milka said
found it Benny

Benny looked at her
and sensed relief
go through him

good
he said

she handed him the item

he looked at it
on the corner
was the letter B

he put it away
and thanked God
for a lucky day.
