SHOSHANA'S DREAM 1962A Poem by Terry CollettA GIRL AND HER DREAM AND THE BOY AND HER PARENTS IN 1962![]() Shoshana woke suddenly, eyes took in day's light, mind searched for the Naaman in her dreams now gone. Downstairs her father's voice called her: breakfast, you are late. She shot from bed, stood like an electrocuted thing, then ran to the bathroom calling down; won't be long, overslept. The Naaman crept in with her, the dreamed one, not the real, and stood by the sink and looked away as she peed. Downstairs her father was crossly sitting mouthing food. The girl's a dreamer, in my day we woke at the right time, washed and dressed and down for breakfast on time every time. The mother sat mouthing toast saying nought. Shoshana splashed water to her face and neck and dried and ran to her bedroom and dressed in her school uniform as fast as she could, the Naaman watched and stared(the dreamed up one not the real). Downstairs her father ate his bacon and eggs and said: the girl's going to end up with a useless drip of a man, no scope, no ideals. Shoshana entered the dinning room and sat at her place, the Naaman stood by the door gazing at her with a smile, sorry I'm late, overslept, had a dream. The father said; eat don't talk, time waits not for you or none, the mother eyed her, Shoshana sat and ate. Dream what dream? the father said, eyeing her, trying to enter her head, studying her face. Just a dream, Shoshana said, kept me late, so real, (she didn't say about the dreamed of Naaman and what they did ). The mother sighed and looked away, she'd been there and had her dreams as well not now, but many times as a young girl. © 2016 Terry Collett |
