Bring Out Your Dead.

Bring Out Your Dead.

A Poem by Terry Collett

Bring out your dead
they said
during the Plague of London
in 1665
or so Mr Finn told us
in history lessons
back in 1957.

There were pictures
in our history books
and red crosses on doors
of those who had the plague.

What the heck
said Denis
who cares about that
long ago stuff.

I liked history
I liked the stories told
about the London back then
and how the plague began
and my old man said
it was spread by rats
and their fleas from the ships
in the London docks
of the times.

I got good points
for that essay
given to me by Mr Finn.

Bring out your dead
he said they said
and stayed in my mind
inside my schoolboy head.

The ghastliness of life before modern medicines is beyond the grasp of most people today. We just don't realize how fortunate we are, Covid and all.
