Lilly One Night 1961.A Poem by Terry Collett
She lay abed in the darkness, no sounds except her shallow breathing. She wondered if there was a God up there or out there somewhere, or if not who brought about this whole show the vast out spreading universe beyond the beyond. The darkness seemed thick, so thick she imagined herself swallowed up in it if she moved. She hoped there was a God to give meaning to the vast circus of love and loss and war and slaughter. Did her mother love her? Was she the imperfect daughter? A dog barked loud and close; someone shouted into the night. She wanted to sleep, to be swallowed up in dreams where nothing is real nor what it seemed. Was she awake? Or was she someone she dreamed?
