Geoffrey Waits 2024.

A Poem by Terry Collett

Geoffrey waits in the queue
of the coffee shop.
In front of him a young man
with his partner beside him
a young woman
who speaks to him
in soft tones.
The barista serves them
and smiles at Geoffrey.
His turn to order
which he does.
He pays and the barista says
she'll bring his order to him.
He sits in his favourite place
by the window and gazes out
his walking frame to the side
out of the way.
Philip Glass piano music
plays on the radio.
He smiles. A moment
of the day.
People pass by the window
unaware he sits and stares
thinking of his now,
the sense of being,
sounds and seeing.

This is the kind of poem that breathes. So still, yet full of life. I could hear the Philip Glass, see the window, feel that soft awareness in Geoffrey’s smile. Thank you for this quiet moment of being.
