Battle and After.

Battle and After.

A Poem by Terry Collett

I don't know
how many died
on this battlefield
don't know what names
or personal qualities
they had before death
carried them off.
Scavengers came
and took clothes
and personal items
and even the teeth
to sell back home.
Buried later
in mass graves
with all hopes and dreams
gone into the air.
The battlefield is quiet now
and barley grows well here
and blessed by the sun.
On quiet days
some say
the ghosts of the slain
wander the battlefield again.

It reads like a whispered tribute to the unnamed. Quiet, respectful, unforgettable.
