Benny and Rain.

Benny and Rain.

A Poem by Terry Collett

Rain in July.
He sits
sipping coffee
listening to Satie
watching the rain fall.
He remembers
standing under a shop's awning
with Ellen seeing the downpour
hit the pavement
like wet bullets.
They stood there
sheltering on the way home
from school
she with dampened hair
and blurred spectacles
and he sensing dampness
on shoulders and hair.
He sips the coffee remembering
listening to the piano notes
fill the air
and the downpour of rain
outside the window
and the icy rain
all those years ago.

This fills a void in me, Terry. I don't know if it's the rain, or the melancholy of each line. The downpour hitting the pavement like wet bullets, and the piano notes filling the air - how perfectly and brilliantly, they read. And linger.
