Beneath Stars and Moon

Beneath Stars and Moon

A Poem by Terry Collett

The church is still at night
as it was back then
the stars still twinkle
and the moon is full
as it was when we stood
outside that night
and gazed at the sky.
We could hear the gentle stream
beneath the wooden bridge.
We spoke in whispers
so not to disturb the dead
in their graves.
Now I stand alone
watching the sky
listening to the gentle stream
talking to you
who lie amongst the dead
some place else.
I whisper
so as not disturb the dead
about the churchyard
but you are not here
beneath the soil
but somewhere else
I do not know
but I wish I did though.
