CHICAGO OFFICE 1924.

CHICAGO OFFICE 1924.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A GIRL IN AN OFFICE IN CHICGAO IN 1924 AND HER THOUGHTS.

"

You know you ought to
Focus on your job,
Your fingers moving

Over the machine,
Your over tired
Mind calculating

The words and figures,
But all you can think
About is the way

Jefferson left you
Like he did, the words
He spoke and the loud

Slamming of the door,
Which caused the photo
Of you late father

To fall to the floor.
The other girls in
The office typing

Are oblivious
To all this, they know
Nothing of your life,

Other than what you
Reveal to them which
Isn’t much, they have

Their own lives to live,
Their own destinies
To indulge in, their

Own pains, hurts and doubts
Without wanting yours
Thrust on top, so you

Work away, your slim
Fingers moving fast
Over the machine

Like some robotic
Creature, but all the
Time Jefferson is

There, his harsh words, his
Unfulfilled lust, his
Anger and all that

Because you didn’t
Let him have his way,
Have his explosion,

His selfish sex, and
The daylight from
The office window

Is shallow, the low
Voices of the girls
And others hum in

The air like busy
Bees, but all is lost
To you, like a death,
The last big freeze.

I like how you were able to place yourself into her situation and feel what she felt. Many times people are crying on the insides why they smile and laugh on the outside. Not willing to expose their anguish because they feel no one cares. She sounds as though she needs a friend whom she can release her hurt to.

I have typed for a living all my life and I know exactly what it is to be making your fingers move while your heart is elsewhere. It is hard to be human in such a situation and the type of situation (pardon pun) you describe paints an excellent projection of the mask the subject is trying to wear.
