Amid the bustle of the busy street
I wait with eyes affixed upon the stair
And breath now holding as I hope to meet
The lovely hat shop girl residing there.
From up above I spy her supple form
Attending ever graceful to her trade;
Each unsure customer is greeted warm
By all the open élan that she bade.
And warmly does she rise to greet me now,
Though near exhaustion from her busy days,
To grant me but a wisp time will allow
And then depart for her next working phase.
It is a minor window to be sure,
For me to make impression on her heart
When all affections seem yet premature
And our encounters sometimes weeks apart.
Not only this, but she is healing still
From one whom once her heart had held so dear;
An absence she is not inclined to fill
In any length of time thus far, I fear.
Perhaps I long for love from her in vain
Though she perceive me only as a friend,
And gently turned, my eagerness shall wane,
And all will come to nothing in the end.
For now, I wait, whatever should unfurl,
‘Till next I meet my lovely hat shop girl.
