The Abyss

The Abyss

A Poem by WanderingWriter
"

A poem about a soul after death.

"
There was a name I once carried
a lantern that gave shape to the dark
that endless empty deep
both around and within.

It is gone now.
Lost somewhere in the black
like the fading memories
of a life's shattered mirror.

I used to think of old sweet things
like prayers against the drowning;
the sound of rain on summer pavement
the color of a beloved voice
a laugh that once burned inside like sunlight

Even this grief has left me now.
Even my thoughts fade and fall apart
whispers of a dying echo
that finds no answer in the dark.

I reach for my own reflection
and find nothing in the black waters
only the weight of something lost
something once cherished
then stripped bare and forgotten.

I have become emptier than a shadow
a mask dissolving into black
beneath it lies the eternal cold
that fills the bones of a desolate soul.

This is a melancholic, yet somehow compassionate poem for me......

A thought provoking piece on the afterlife..

Thanks for sharing

There is both sadness and heaviness in this poem. The darkness is consuming. Nicely composed.
